Calendar sales raise funds to build a new school

Neighbours, including Ginger Ellsworth of the U.S., came up with the idea to sell custom calendars to raise funds for the construction of a new school in Kyomya East.

Sustainable tourism brings opportunity to Omiito

Omiito, Uganda, is rich in culture and natural resources, but the people are poor and poorly educated. To bring employment and development to Omiito, a group of young people are organizing a sustainable tourism project that will highlight the area’s natural beauty, history and cultural heritage.

Visitors and local people with disabilities work together

In 2008, Neighbours helped fill the Beam of Hope for the Disadvantaged (BEHOD) website (www.behod.org) with stories and pictures. Through NABUUR’s partnership with FairGround Sessions, 5 young Dutch people with disabilities and their friends visited BEHOD.

Neighbours donate goods and funds and facilitate deworming of 600 children

Neighbour and co-Facilitator Ginger from the US adopted 18 children, and sent funds to build 3 brick houses using local labor. Ginger also donated three sewing machines were donated by and 3 tailors made uniforms for 150 students.

Radio spot, Easter Party and a Calender 2009 for the children of Kyomya

In April, Canadian Broadcast Corporation’s Radio One program "Search Engine" featured a story about the Kyomya East Village Project, and the role Neighbours have played in helping Facilitator David Sabiiti Kibagoo to build a new school and health center for the village. In the interview, David talks about how Neighbours including Jennifer from the U.S. and Mary from Italy, helped him develop plans for the project. The radio program brought pride and positive energy to the people in Kyomya.

Computers arrive and training begins in Jinja Central

In February, after nearly 5 months, computers that were sent to Jinja Central last year finally reached their destination. After unpacking, the installation and testing of the computers, the training began with 5 computers.

Computer training offers new path for Ugandan youth

Paidha is a rare peaceful haven in Western Uganda on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. It consists of approximately 500 adult members. It has a relatively cold climate, compared to the lower parts of the Nebbi district. The area has been subject to a lot of population migration, and its main economic activity is domestic agriculture and commerce.
