Kasman made a design for the CTC centre. (which is attached)
This needs to be discussed, reviewed and then ultimately translated to a bill of materials, so we know what materials and cost esitmates are needed to build the centre.

I wrote to Javier concerning the bill of quantity and costings for the Kabwe CTC.He wrote back with advice.

This is what he said:

I've seen the proposal and I think it's not bad, but there are a few questions I want to remark.

1.- There's a lot of big windows and curtain walls, too much glass in my opinion. I think glass has two disadvantages: cost and it's no weather-friendly. When you have, in severe humid and hot weather, big surfaces of glass, you have to design at least sunscreens or, if money allows, a good HVAC system. And we must not forget that glass is expensive.
2.- I can´t say anything else about the project because I don´t know the site. That is, there should be a site plan, with the topography, roads, etc.

As an advice, I would complete the information prior to develop a bill of materials.

Please post this answer in the Nabuur group.

To proceed further about design, could you arrange me internal layout map like one here under showing dimensions of plot, covered area and partitions in side covered area.

Although i should equally confess that i know nothing about engineering and that makes it difficult for me to understand the posted statement.

We have two floor plans already but we may design even something newer if possible.It was a two-storey-building.We may have a one-storey-building as we are not sure of who is going to sponsor what type of building.However, i have attached the first floor for an existing plan we already have.

I have sent a message to a Nabuur volunteer who is an engineer asking him, as a favour, to have a look at the building design and give his opinion on whether it should all be on the ground floor, or not, and what construction materials should be used. He is really busy but if he can do this, Virendra, it will give you an idea of for what materials we need to find the costs. Of course, if you are able to consult with engineers and/or architects who you personally know, that would be fantastic! Also, Virendra, are you OK for the task to be assigned to you?

Hello Everybody !

My name is Rafael and I was invited by Lynley to make some observation with the CTC building design.

Generally, the concept of the design presented by Virendra has a very good layout for a typical CTC Clinic. Though I agree with Rico's comment regarding the glass curtain that will need a heavy airconditioning, but we can still modify and adopt with the environment condition.

Further observation with the concept design:
1. Very Important : We need to know the diminesions (i.e. length, width and height)of the layout.
2. Type of floor finishes
3. We can mitigate the use of HVAC or airconditioning by removing the glass curtain and replace it with a low raillings (waistline level)along hallways.
4. Proposed type of roof ? Galvanized corrogated sheet are the usual with insulator.
5. Do we have abundant supply of cement, concrete hollow blocks, sand and gravel, plywood, lumber, reinforcing defromed bar ?

I don't suggest a 2nd floor, because it will be structurally costly. The fact that we will be having a donated parcel of land it will be wise to develop the building horizontally.

The costs which is badly needed in the proposal can be estimated once we had trimmed down some uncertainty in the concept design.

Josephat, can we have some pictures of the proposed site ? This will give us more idea with the topography, natural landscape, adjacent structures.

Virendra, do we have an autoCAD file of the drawings? This will help us edit/modify the drawings.

The neighbor that designed the CTC i think did not finish working on it and it was during the same time that the nabuur website was changed and some neighbours found it difficult to continue with the new site. Hi Rafeal,

Welcome to Kabwe,I have understood your concerns and observations made on the current CTC design.All the same,if we can try to work according to vision on the modification of the CTC,that would help us alot and cut costs.

The neighbor that designed the CTC i think did not finish working on it and it was during the same time that the nabuur website was changed and some neighbours found it difficult to continue with the new site.

The construction duration will be 8 to 10 months assuming that the resources needed will be delivered on time espcially the funds. If we ever have a chance to get Kasman's drawing it is important to have the dimensions. Otherwise, we have to assume. For the meantime that we are waiting for other informations, we can start canvassing the basic materials that I had posted. Having an idea on how much are the contruction materials I can derived an estimated cost for preliminary budget. Josephat, from time to time, I will be asking some information until we zero in the cost. Lyn, I am trying to login to this village but I am quite lost where I can sign in as a neighbour. By the way, I think we will also need the following facilites to include a) Small Dormetory for the rsident doctor and nursing staff b) recyling facilites for the hospital waste - this is very critical, proper disposal of waste. It is not just a kitchen waste involed here. So we have to research some information regarding small hospital/clinic disposal facilities.
