I recently chatted with Eric and he said to have a modest Christmas dinner, $200 would provide some maize, chicken, meats and rice to prepare enough for all to have something to eat. This year, like many communities around the world, less is available due to the economic situation. The cost of maize has tripled and individual community members can no longer afford to purchase maize let alone contribute some to a party. Last year a number of neighbours contributed gifts, but there are not any this year. Eric and I were trying to come up with inexpensive (or free) things that can be done at the local level so that the kids have something to take home from the party. Some suggestions included: 1) having the committee members write a card to each child (this could be just paper folded with a drawing and/or greeting for each child) 2) Worry stones - when I was little, I had a flat oval stone called a worry stone. I would carry it in my pocket and when I was troubled or worrying, I would pull it out and rub it. This is an old custom and used in many places around the world. It is supposed to reduce stress and help calm the nerves. Maybe community members could gather round, smooth rocks, clean them and write a saying such as PEACE or HAPPINESS or something like that on them and give them to the children. There are sermons and stories online that can be found to introduce the worry stone. Any other ideas? If you think you can contribute even a small amount, please contact myself or Eric.
