We've found 10 computers in the Netherlands: Aletta Jacobs College in Hoogezand has donated them.
Now we need to arrange shipment to Jinja! :-D

Also, there needs to be serious concern to avoid virus infection. you can do this with Windows XP if there is constant and regular and paid updating of anti-viral software. Or if the machines have 500mb of RAM, the machines can run Ubuntu Linux and there will be no problem of viruses at all, and no operating system cost... and that comes with OpenOffice and Thunderbird and Firefox - which do all the things a Microsoft system does - and look essentially the same, allowing skills development for work on any system anywhere.
Without some determination to deal with the virus issue, there will be a collapse of the whole system under virus attack within a month. You may think you have no connection to the internet and viruses, but someone will put in a disk with a virus on it and that will be very complicated to get out of the system.
Nabuur is an open source concept - community supporting community. So are open source operating systems and software. I find it ironic that in this open source environment people hesitate to move from virus infected MS products to virus-free Linux.

is an African word and Ubuntu is really an 'open source' concept.

Note that Ubuntu incorporates OpenOffice.

Hello Neighbours,
Thank you so much for always coming up in time of ne and give such good advise. Yes we were woried about the cables but i also asked some friends and they told me we can use adaptors they can serve the purpose.
I think Barb metioned it the voltage i think Pelle will have to check and see or we will look to other altanative just as you mentioned stepdown can help us and i know there will be no obstacles .
The Virus we will have to deal with it for in Uganda they know about it or if not so i still have Pelle on the other side i believe we are working together in every thing we will be able to curb that. Oh .... am very greatfull with you people Mary thank you Dennis and whoever is contributing for the good of this village. :-D
To pelle and paul:
I read a shipment of ten computers has already been arranged, but is this enough for the whole centre? At this point I do not have an idea how many people will need to follow courses at the centre. Moreover: are there any plans for expansion in the future?
The reason for my questions on this topic is that together with my two partners I might be able to organise another few used computers and possibly even a laptop. A portable laptop would especially be useful for the teacher (if there will be any) guiding the training participants, in the event of having to show examples to separate students.
The used computers I received word of are currently for open sale at my father's company so a little speed in deciding about getting a few extra computers is needed if we want to get them before anyone else does.
Please let me know if this will be of any use to the project,
Marc

Dear all,
Preparation AND mental support made last Sunday's run a success: 10 kilometers in 55 minutes, 20 seconds!!
We made a short video of the event:
In the meantime we've gathered nearly 1000 euro. That's enough for the shipment... and training a few people. Time to discuss priorities with Paul and BEHOD board
Pelle and Marijntje
congratulations, Pelle, a great result! And a nice movie too - glad you had good weather.
I have also just been looking at the major report Paul submitted here

and am inspired to run through all the other project elements.
cheers
Dennis
Hi all,
Been out of action because of personal problems. I may not have so much time to sit by my computer but I can gladly help paul with all software and technical assistance he requires on the ground. I have some teaching software, antivirus, and many applications to enable have a smooth operation of the centre. Jinja is on one of my business routes therefore I can pass by anytime. Paul please get in touch on 0782-485982. I will be glad to hear from you.
Daniel
Dear all,
Quick update:
- This week Suzan from the Netherlands will travel to Uganda. She will carry a camera for Paul.
- As said in the last newsletter, Paul has already met Daniel. Daniel will help Paul during the start up of the centre. Thanks!
- Aaron, Paul's friend, has already started his training as a computer technician.
- The work on the shower seems to be in progress.... I'm hoping to see some pictures soon :-D
Pelle
Dear all,
Paul just heard that the computers will arrive in Kampala this week. Hopefully we'll get customs clearance in January :-(
Paul told me the people in Jinja are eagerly waiting for the computers to arrive.
Pelle
Hello Paul and Pelle,
Thank you so much for your Christmas greetings to all Jinja Central's neighbours. Do have a very happy Christmas yourselves too - and in the new year, one hopes that we will achieve all the goals we set ourselves, for the project!
As far as I am concerned, you have been the best www.nabuur.com village facilitator/local representative team - and you two deserve to be commended by all our neighbours: and recognised by Nabuur HQ, too!
I admire your sense of selflessness, very much. God bless you both! And I would also like to wish all our Jinja Central neighbours a very merry Christmas, indeed - and may the new year be one full of positive outcomes, for us all!
Best wishes,
Kofi.
After a 4.5-month journey, the computers finally arrived in Jinja today!
