Arrange shipment for malaria nets from the US to Uganda
Step:
1
Last week one of BEHODs staff members, Mustafa, died of malaria.
This has made us aware again of the fact that many Ugandans still don't have the means to protect themselves from mosquito bites, and when they get ill don't have the money to buy medicine.
Through a US contact, Mosquito Curtains, two 40 lb boxes with nets are available to be shipped from the US to Uganda, to be divided amongst a number of NABUUR projects.
Phil Costa tried to make an arrangement with DHL, but to no avail so far. Shipment costs are estimated around $1000,-
We seek your help to find free or cheap transport from the US to Uganda!

Hi Pelle
I know that Busukuma village are also interested in this topic, and have talked about shipping a little in the past (I wasn't involved in any of the discussions).
So I have posted a link to this task at http://www.nabuur.com/en/village/busukuma/project/task/we-need-a-help-pe... suggesting that anyone with useful information should come and post it here.
Apologies, I don't have any ideas to add at the moment.
Mary
Hi Pelle and Mary,
For you to start any thing on this task you must know that this is our effort Me , Barbs and Milena so its being unfair to hear that Jinja got the nets and hence Busukuma hasnt got so on every task on every village busukuma has to get ashare because its our knowlegde and effort to start this thing.
kind regards
frank
Hi Frank
I have replied to your post on Busukuma. As I said, Nabuur is all about cooperation between people to find solutions. Maby people working together can achieve things that individuals cannot.
Hi Pelle
If it have not been done already, is it possible for someone at Nabuur to explain to the various communites involved that nets will be split between them, and roughly how many they are likely to receive? This will avoid any more confusion.
It would also be great to invite all their neighbours to join this discussion as its possible they don't know about the need to find low cost shipping for the nets. And one of them just might have the perfect contact to sort all this out!
Mary
Hi Frank,
It's my understanding that there are a couple of communities working together to get the nets to Uganda. They all should have their share. I know Paul has been involved in the discussions because of the NGO status of BEHOD and his experience with importing goods.
We both thought it would be good to raise some extra attention for this matter, in order to get the nets to Uganda.
Pelle
Dear all,
The shipment problem for the nets was discussed during the dutch innovation seminar, where 150 people were present.
These are the ideas that came up:
- There's an organization related to KLM (Royal Dutch Airlines) that ships goods for good causes.
- Wings of support, also from KLM, where a site could be opened so that frequent flyers can donate their miles.
- social networks internet on internet where shipment from Georgia to Uganda could be arranged.
- a lady from the US is flying to Netherlands around Christmas, another person is flying from the Netherlands to Uganda at the same time.
- one of the people has a wife who is stewardess with KLM. She could help with shipment to
Contact for Paul with Wings of support - for the long term
Short term - $1000,- could probably be raised amongst the participants today
These are the ideas for now.
We'll try to come back later today!
Pelle
It has been great for me sharing our problems to the Dutch innovation seminar and am very happy with the response i believe the ideas that they came up with will help us get the nets to Uganda and many people will will be protected from the malaria.
When these nets are here i promise will save many lives of the marginalized.
Thank you all of you who participated in this seminar.
Paul

Dear all,
After a few emails and phone calls back and forth it turns out that Florence (the lady from Uganda, working for Mott MacDonald) is not able to help out.
Gerdie has contacted Wings of Support, but it turns out they only ship goods for projects they officially support, which is not the case with Jinja (yet). This doesn't sound like a quick solution.
I'll contact Mott Macdonald US directly, to see if they can help out.
Ken - thanks for looking up the USPS prices. I'm not sure where the earlier $1000 came from, but it looks like we're down to $400 now. :-)
Anyone else with other (even cheaper) options?
Pelle
I've met Sander van Zanten, who lives in Uganda. He told me that on the black market in Lira, malaria nets cost around UGX 1000 (40 eurocents). These are nets that are distributed by aid organizations to the people in the camps around Lira.
Of course I'm hesitant about setting out to buy nets there, because that stimulates the trade of nets that were meant for other purposes... but it has made me think about the whole idea of shipping nets from the US to Uganda ourselves.
Mary Smith also forwarded a message from AllAfrica about 17 million nets to be distributed in Uganda:
"Anthony Bugembe
Kampala
THE Government plans to distribute 17 million mosquito nets to fight malaria, the health state minister has said.
Emmanuel Otaala said the new consignment is expected in January 2009.
It will compliment the six million nets that the Government has given out to pregnant women and children under five."
I've discovered that the Malaria Consortium (www.malariaconsortium.org) is housed in Kampala and contacted them. They seem to be involved in the major distribution schemes and might be able to tell us under which conditions communities can be included in their programs.
Pelle
Hello this is great,
But just as you mentioned it might be able to tell us under which conditions communities can be included in their programs.we will wait for their reply ,
But as for now most people in Uganda they get this kind of support and they end up in black market like in Lira or Gulu they don't usually reach the targeted group.
But we can still wait and see the criteria they are going to use. But its a big consignment which would cover almost half of Uganda.
