Dear Neighbors!
It's with profound shock that I report the untimely death of our dear girl Lydia, one of the orphans under KSP. Mary called me that she passed away about 30 min ago. Lydia had developed diarrhea about 5 days ago and admitted to the Budondo health center with no improvements and sent back home! The eldest sibling ,Fred ,the house mother and Mary were at her bed side. This is so bad and traggic! She was disabled, had slow growth, less apetite for food and used to draw away from the rest. Let's join this child-family as we send out our condolences. Burrial is tommorrow,Friday the 14th.

Hi David,
My heart goes out to you and everyone in the community for this tragic loss.
I hope we can take comfort in knowing that with all the good that is being accomplished in Kyomya, it will serve as a wonderful and fitting tribute to the late Lydia - and more importantly, it will prevent further passing of children and youth in the community.
Please pass on our condolences to her family.
Warmly,
Romina

I saw David's news this morning before I went to school, and was deeply saddened - Even though I have yet to meet the 18 children I have adopted, Lydia has always held a special place in my heart. I so looked forward to holding her when I visit next June, and bringing her favorite chicken dish.... David, please give my regards to Fred, Henry and the rest of the family.

David i am really sorry for the sad and tragic news. However be encouraged that you have done the best you could to help Lydia(being a parent when she needed one). All of us someday will follow. What a reminder that we are passing. We are not on this earth forever. May her soul rest in peace.

Hello David,
I was very saddened to hear the news about Lydia. In July I was blessed to have met her, to see her shining face and see her bright smile. She will be missed. Please send my condolences to everyone especially her siblings.
I have attached a picture here taken in July.

Thank you for posting the beautiful pictures of Lydia! What a beautiful young lady. I pray for Lydia that she is now peaceful and rest assured she is being well taken care of. She will be our little Kyomya Angel. Please pass on my deepest sympathy and regards to her family and the community. Let's work hard to get Kyomya villagers the healthcare they need to avoid more preventable and/or treatable illness!
Jen
Yes she can ideed be Kyomya's Little angel. As far as teh health issues are concerned do we have a task for this? What can we do about this, as this concern was the first thing I spoke with David about last week.
Tia
Hi Tia and Jennifer!
Thanks for these posts. yes i agree with you that we need to progress the village health care system in Kyomya east. I made a report about our health care system and what needs to be done and sent it to Ginger. For now I strongly recommend a 4-5 day health and sensitisation seminar conducted by the Government health workers and local leaders, provision of 700 mosquito nets to 700 children below 8 yrs and provision of health care posters as visual Aids/materials as most people are illiterate. The training to cover topics such as-malaria,HIV/Aids,worm infestation, safe and clean water, hyginie, family planning and nutrition. I need volunteers to help me facilitate the above to take place in the village. a health people will lead to development here.I think Ginger can set up a health task where all of us can post to redirect this health discussion.
Thanks,
David
David - I thought we needed 70 more mosquito nets which will cost us $700 USD, a reasonable sum for children to raise with the $1 wrist bands this spring. This is the first time I am hearing about 700 nets, for which someone will have to find a corporate or foundation donor - that is $7,000 worth!! And, I am sure every village in Uganda has written requesting mosquito nets. This is where it would be very handy for Nabuur to share resources with villages -or at least share what foundations have been written to and said no. I feel like we duplicate research and requests, wasting time with companies that do not sponsor. Perhaps there is some way on the site to figure this out - I just haven't got the knowledge to find it.

Ginger :)
I know several other villages looked into getting mosquito nets and they found a company that makes nets to donate a large number of nets to Nabuur and it was to be distrubuted to the villages that were apart of this earlier request. Last I knew they were still searching for funding to pay for shipping the nets to Uganda from I think the US.
Jen
Hi Jennifer,
Yes you are correct. I contacted Mosquito Curtains some time ago and they agreed to allow Nabuur to be the official receiver of the netting. These are NOT individual nets. It is very large remnants of mosquito netting that would have to be made into individual or family sized nets. The owner of the company said he had been sending to an orphanage somewhere (not sure of the country) and they would actually put the netting on windows and doors so that the entire building was protected, rather than just individual people. This is a far more effective approach as it benefits the entire household.
The original netting had been for Busukuma, Uganda. I had carried a small amount over to them in my luggage (all that the airline would allow me), but they need way more. They will likely be receiving the first batches. Jinja Central, as I understand it, has agreed to act as the village that the netting will be delivered to. Then other villages (not sure what they propose the process to be) can eventually get some netting. This will take time as the company only provides remnant pieces (VERY large) a few times per year. I think Nabuur has managed to find a shipping solution, but I am not positive. I haven't heard anything else on this.
So there is a possibility of getting netting through this arrangement, but as I said, there are villages that would be ahead of Kyomya, namely Busukuma and Jinja and I'm not sure what the process for getting netting/applying for netting will be.
Barb
ok...thanks Barb. If we all keep our eyes out for more info. on this we can keep each other up on things. If anyone hears how we can "sign up" for netting and get on the list please let us know.
Thanks again, Barb.
