Research Foundations that support the purchase of Equipment
Kyomya has started educating the farmers and provided seeds and tools for through a farmers cooperative. However, one of the biggest obstacles to their success is having a vehicle to transport the cash crops to the market. The farmers cooperative would like to purchase a truck for this.
We require someone to research foundations, organizations or other agencies that may be able to assist with finding a vehicle for the farmers. Alternatively, research ways that the farmers may acquire a vehicle.
A Busy Time in Kyomya - September 2008 Newsletter

It has been a while since I put together a newsletter, so I just wanted to update everyone on the progress that has been made so far.
Avocado - Possible Income Generating Activity
Avocados are grown fairly easily in Kabondo, which is located in one of two areas in Kenya that can grow them. The community would like to examine the possibility of turning avocados into an income-generating idea including the production of value-added products (such as oil for beauty products or use in cooking/food preparation).
Help us gather research on the possible uses of avocados and its parts (oil, seed, leaves, skin, etc). Any ideas are welcome!
The committee has selected 80 farmers to be part of a trial planting 'co-op'. Each farmer has received a small micro-loan to supply him seeds, new hoe, bug spray and training. Each farmer will plant food for his family - and also join with others to plant food for the market. This year they will try to rent a truck to take the produce to Jinja town to receive 40% more on their produce! And, each farmer will pay back his loan, and put 10% of his profit into the co-op bank account to be used for new tools, equipment, truck rental, loans to someone in trouble.
